Care/Cleaning Instruction

These carpets were made to last a lifetime; many have outlasted their makers.  To ensure your carpet will be an heirloom, it is important to take proper care of it. The best care you can give the carpet is to have it cleaned by a professional carpet cleaner. However, we realize this may not be a practical solution for everyone. As such, we have compiled a few handy dandy tips on how to keep yours in good condition.

  • WARNING: Direct sunlight can fade the color of your carpet. If yours is located in an area that gets consistent sun we recommend that you rotate it from time to time so that it fades evenly.
  • Vacuum when dirty. Make sure you adjust your vacuum’s height setting so that the brush is not hitting the carpet too much. Vacuum in the direction of the fibers, DO NOT VACUUM THE FRINGES. If the carpet is delicate, or extremely old/valuable consider using the carpet cleaning attachment, if your vacuum has one. * The goal here is to lift recent dirt and debris and to keep the fibers from matting together. ( * ) Exercise extreme caution for silk and antique rugs, or if yours has sentimental value.
  • Take your carpet outside and physically hit/beat it when needed. This will help loosen any dirt that has found its way deeper into the carpet. This process can be very dusty, so be sure to do it outside. We recommend you combine this with the vacuum process outlined above. In addition, take this chance to vacuum the bottom of the carpet as well.
  • For spills other than water, like coffee or pet stains, use wool-safe cleaning detergent to manually agitate the spill area. For water spills, just use a towel to absorb the excess moisture.
  • If you can, have your carpet professionally cleaned every 3-5 years.
